Closer to needle-free injections
July 1, 2005 7:56 am

Aradigm Corporation is a step closer to marketing their needle-free injection product.  Another trial of the Intraject system was finished and the results were positive.

The study focused on 24 patients who injected themselves in the thigh, abdomen and arm.  The results were similar to traditional needle injections.

Aradigm wants to provide triptan class drugs with this system for migraine and cluster sufferers.  Injections can get the drug into your system fast, but many people have trouble successfully injecting with a needle.  The Intraject system promises to be an easier way to stop the pain fast.

Food and sleep
July 2, 2005 9:12 am

Sleep is a blessing to a headache sufferer - but what if you have trouble sleeping?  In the past we've talked about the link between serotonin (levels of which have been linked to migraine, cluster, depression and bulimia) and tryptophan.
Turkey
But can you increase your serotonin levels by eating tryptophan-rich foods?

Folk wisdom has said that eating turkey (which is rich in tryptophan) makes you sleepy.  And a recent study published in the May 2005 edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition seems to confirm the fact that these tryptophan foods really do make a difference in sleep patterns.

In the study, subjects were evaluated overnight after eating either a tryptophan diet or a normal diet.  The subjects who ate the tryptophan rich foods not only slept better, but were more alert in the morning.  This especially applied to those who normally had trouble sleeping.

For ideas on what to eat, check out this page on food and serotonin.

For us linear thinkers...
July 2, 2005 9:19 pm

There's a new article online entitled,"How to treat a migraine".  Of course, as many of us know, there really is not one way.  Migraine treatment can be a complex thing, and it's different for everyone.

But, if you're looking for some step by step advice for dealing with migraine, you may find this article helpful.  Not only does it include tips of its own, it also links all over the website (and beyond) to articles and tips on each topic.  So this is an excellent place to start if you think you have migraine, or you've just been diagnosed, and you're not sure what to do next.  Check it out!  And I'll see you next week.

Laying blame
July 30, 2005 3:19 pm

I just got back from three weeks of travel in Mexico.  Yes, that would explain the lack of blog entries, but we have a lot of new interesting tips and news coming up in the next couple of weeks!

While I was travelling I got thinking about one problem that we can have when it comes to headaches.  The problem is that it's very easy to jump to conclusions about what is causing a headache.  We might have a headache at the same time as a storm, or we might get a headache or migraine after eating a new type of food.  It's very easy to lay the blame on the most obvious thing.  Of course, that food must have caused the headache!  Of course, it was the storm.  Of course, it was the tacos or the altitude or ... whatever.

So the tip of the day is, be careful before jumping to conclusions.  I travelled for a while with someone who complained of headaches every day.  So, was it something in Mexico causing the problem?  Maybe, but probably not.  It was likely just all the sudden changes combined.  If you travel somewhere and get headaches, don't blame it on the place, and don't give up on travelling.  Instead, give yourself a little longer to adjust.  Rest up.  Try to keep your schedule consistant.  You may find that you can do more than you thought you could.
